Abstract

A searle-couette tupe viscosity meter is used to enable the viscosity to be measured under conditions of high speed and those related to the important shear forces exerted on a sample. An adjustable speed motor (1) has its speed measured by a tachometer (2) connected via an articulated flexible deive (3) to a torque meter (4) and a cylinder (5). This cylinder is mounted coaxially in a second cylinder (6) around which is mounted a cooling system (7). The gap between the cylinders is made very small, (25 microns) and speed of rotation of the internal cylinder reaches 3000 revs per minute. The temperature of the external cylinder body and its wall are measured.
