Abstract

A hopper tapers down to a pneumatic cylinder fitted across the hopper outlet with the axis of the cylinder at right angles to the axis of the hopper; the cylinder houses a double-acting piston rod carrying a piston at each end which is subjected alternately to air pressure via cylinder end inlets. Between the pistons a central valve chamber contains a value sleeve which slides on the piston rod as compressed air is fed alternately to chamber end inlets to act on sleeve piston, the sleeve ends carrying sliding valve members which alternately open the cylinders pumping spaces either to the feed hopper, e.g. via inlet ports or to an outlet funnel e.g. via discharge ports. The system is used for pumping pastes and like substances from a mixing or storage hopper to a further stage of process, particularly edible pastes being pumped to biscuit moulding machines.
