Abstract

The concn. or bundling of corpuscular radiation, esp. for machining metals or ceramics, where the corpuscular ray is converted by glass-fibre-optics, to a rectangular beam which is then focused to form a burning-line. This burning-line is directed e.g., onto a metal bar mounted in a lathe, ahead of the turning-tool, so that fissures are produced in the metal surface by melting and/or evaporation which act as "chip-breakers", i.e., the turning tool removes the layers of metal between the fissures. The distance between the fissures (and thus the length of the chip) depends on the pulse-frequency of the beam and the dia. and rotational speed of the bar. The focusing unit consists of a row of glass discs with convex end-faces which convert the rectangular beam to a single line. A line-type of cut is thus produced in the metal instead of a chain of holes formed by a burning point.
