Abstract
A seamless steel tube blank is initially inserted into the upper flared end of a first die made in a stepped form including a narrow mid portion forming a shoulder with the upper end, and having a straight lower end. A punch with an enlarged body with a pushing shoulder at the lower end engages the blank, the spindle portion of the punch acting like a mandrel within the blank. The partly shaped blank is then put in a second die and shaped with another punch with a widened upper portion of dia. equal to the workpiece o.d., simultaneously the mid-portion expands the upper bore into the flare. Relatively low forming pressures are required. Useful for steel spindle housing mfr. for journalling lorry wheel axles.
