Abstract
1,206,072. Making rear axle casings; stamping. M. NAKAMURA. 21 Feb., 1969, No. 9409/69. Headings B3A and B3Q. A method of making a rear axle casing comprises reducing the diameter of two ends of a steel tube without altering the centre portion thereof and applying pressure to the exterior of the tube against a controlled interior pressure until the material of the tube is deformed to the required shape. The ends of the tube are reduced by rotary swaging and the centre portion of the tube may be expanded by internal hydraulic pressure, Fig. 3 (not shown), to reduce the wall thickness of the centre portion of the tube prior to forming it in dies 17, 18 by hydraulic pressure. The ends of the tube are held by chuck devices 13 and plugged by means 14, 15, the means 15 having a fluid passage 16 by which the hydraulic pressure is applied. The process is carried out at ambient temperature. The portion 19 of the formed tube is removed to form an internally flanged opening to which a differential housing (22), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be secured.
