Abstract

The agitator is immersed in the melt and reciprocates along a substantially straight line. It has two working surfaces (top and bottom) extending transversely to its axis of movement. It is reciprocated at a speed of >=15 times the dia. of the larger working surface per sec. The vessel is substantially wider than the stirrer permitting the setting up of toroidal shape melt flow patterns which combine between the end positions of the agitator movement, the flow in this common region being transverse to the direction of movement of the agitator.
