Abstract

Oral agents contain a cpd. the molecules of which (a) are sufficiently small to be able to penetrate any deposits on the teeth and (b) have sufficient functional gps. to be able to dislodge calcified deposits; the agents also contain a carrier. The pref. active ingredient is mellitic acid, which strongly inhibits the crystal growth of calcium hydroxyapatite and diminishes the dissolution and equilibrium solubility of calcium hydroxyapatite in acid. The agents inhibit the deposition of dental plaque due to pptn. of polyphosphates from the saliva, thus inhibiting dental caries.
