Abstract

The liq. organo-tin cpd. (A) is added to a soln. of a polymer consisting of >=50% of acrylonitrile in an aq. salt soln. and reacts with the salt to form a finely-divided solid tin cpd. The latter is uniformly dispersed in the fibres produced by wet spinning of the soln. The salt is pref. an alkali metal thiocyanate and (A) is a dialkyl tin carboxylic ester, added to the acrylonitrile copolymer soln. in amt. 0.5-5 wt. %. The co-monomer e.g. vinylidene chloride, is present to give flame-retardant props. Presence of (A) stabilises the copolymer against breakdown and discolouration by heat and light. It is not lost from the fibres during processing, and smooth glossy fibres can be obtd.
