Abstract

The title polymer is made by reacting a pectin and a polyol in the presence of water and opt. other appropriate additives to give a gel which is then dehydrated. The additives are e.g. fillers to increase resistance to degradation (lignite or silica) or plant nutrients e.g. enzymes, vitamins, trace elements. Suitable polyols are glycerol, sorbitol, ethylene glycol etc. and pectin sources beet, apple, berry waste etc., esp. comminuted cocoa or coffee beans. Prods. are useful as soil conditioners, seed coatings or to coat seedlings being transplanted; as binder and protective coating for food and fodder, and as a packaging material.
