Abstract

A catalytic chamber consists of an enclosure, through which can flow a gas which is to be treated, and a catalyst support. The catalyst support is coated with a ceramic matl. which is heated to a temp. at which its viscosity reaches a critical value. Particles of a substance having a high microporosity are then deposited on the ceramic material. The critical value of the viscosity is low enough for the particles to adhere to the surface but high enough for only a part to adhere, so that the initial microporosity is maintained. The particles may be a catalyst support e.g. alumina (Al2O3) or the catalyst itself. The process gives increased specific surface between particles and gas and therefore increased efficiency. A specific application is depositing catalyst on motor vehicle systems.
