Abstract

The catalytic oxidn. of NH3 to the oxides of N is effected by passing NH3/NH3 + air mixts. (ratio 0.05-0.12) through a fixed catalyst bed at 20,000-200,000 n1/hr. (or a fluidised bed consisting of 50-700 mu m particles at 50-2,000 n1/hr.) 1-20 bars and 50-200 degrees C where the air may be O-enriched and where the catalyst consists of >=80 wt.% Bi2O3 and Co3O4 together with 0.05-0.5% of an alkali metal oxide (pref. H2O). The catalyst can contain rare earth oxides, e.g., Ce, Nd, La, Th at 0.5-20 wt.% as promoters together with 0.5-20% of >=1 of , MN, Mo, Fe, Mg, Cr, V, Nb is oxide form. The catalyst, 0.5-100 m2g-1 surface area, is prepd. by mixing all or some of the components as nitrates, the remainder being oxides or carbonates and firing the mixt. at approx. 700 degrees C to obtain a spinal structure.
