Abstract

Polymerisation of C2H4 and opt. an alpha-olefin or styrene at 20-100 degrees C and is not >40 kg/cm2 is carried out in the presence of a catalyst obtd. by (a) mixing a trivalent metal halide with a gp. I-IV, VII or VIII metal carbonate and/or a gp. I metal hydrogen carbonate; (b) reacting the resultant mixt. with a gp. IVa or Va transition metal cpd. in the presence of an aromatic cpd. without active H; and (c) combining the resultant solid prod. with an organo-Al cpd. The pref. temp. for reaction (b) is 50-200 degrees C. The dispersibility of the catalyst can be kept at a suitable level to increase the activity and control the density of the polymer so that polymers with superior properties can be produced.
