Abstract

A soln. of synthetic resin (e.g. PVC, polystyrene, polyisylidenefluoride, ABS) dissolved in a first solvent (e.g. tetrahydrofurance, chloroform, dimethyl formamide, etc) is mixed with a second solvent (e.g. isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol) which is miscible with the first solvent but incapable of dissolving the resin, and the soln. is pref. impregnated in a pref. synthetic fabric (e.g. woven, nonwoven, knitted). The soln. is then heated to evaporate off the volatile components to produce an extremely thin porous fabric having a uniform distribution of pores which allow passage of ions but prevent passage of particles. The fabric may be used as an air filter or as a separator wall for electrolyte in a battery. The soln. may contain colourants and thickening agents.
