Abstract

Acetylene and higher acetylenes are sepd. from crude pyrolysis gases by (a) separating the higher acetylenes and a minor amt. of C2H2 in a 1st column at high pressure and ca. ambient temp. using a small amt. of solvent; (b) isolating the C2H2 in a 2nd column at ca. atmos. pressure and ca. ambient temp.; (c) purging the higher acetylenes at high temp. by introducing a small amt. of H2-rich gas sepd. in a 3rd column from the gas remaining after the extraction in the 1st column, the 3rd column operating at high pressure and ca. ambient temp. and being supplied with a large amt. of solvent; and (d) sepg. the C2H2 dissolved in the solvent from the 3rd column in a 4th column operating at a pressure close to atmos. press. and high temp.
