Abstract

The insect hosts, e.g. moths, are produced by infecting grains, e.g. barley or maize, with the eggs of the host insects, and placing them in containers, so that the obtd. imagos concentrate in the lower part of the containers because of their negative reaction to light. The adult insects are led through a guiding cone to the insect conduit and as the moths accumulate, an air pump transfers the moth imagos to a collector. After mating, the femal moths lay their eggs in the cells of horizontal sheets and are cleaned in a pneumatic separator from the bodies of dead moths etc. They are then stuck on ribbons and introduced into another container where they are infected with the parasite trichogamma, making use of the positive reaction of the latter to light. The infected eggs are transferred to conditioning chambers for the development of the trichogamma in the moth eggs and in adapting them to natural climatic conditions, until their distribution for use in the fields. The egg-eating parasites leave the moth eggs and deposit their own eggs in those of the harmful insects. The trichogamma larvae develop inside these eggs and feed on their contents, thus destroying the harmful insects in the egg stage. The process creates the optimum controlled conditions for obtg. insects with a high quality from the biological point of view.
