Abstract

The raw material particles are of size 20 mesh and consists of a dense packed mixture of iron oxide, carbon, and organic matter which can be pyrolised to carbon, together with an aq. soln. of a surfactant and a binder selected from alkali silicates, waste sulphite liquor, molasses, sugars, and soluble starch. The amt. of liquid is sufficient to slightly exceed the amt. held by the particles and a dense plastic mass is then formed by vibration. The mass is then pelletised by tumbling on an oscillating and vibrating surface and reduced by heating in a suitable furnace.
