Abstract

The solns contg Co carbonyl hydrate and neutral carbonyls e.g. Co2 (CO)8 are prepd by treating aq. solns (I) of Co salts with CO and H2 in vol. ratio 2:1 -1:2 at 50-200 degrees C and 50-500 atm in presence of inert polar solvents (4-10C) slightly sol. or insol. in H2O (as 0.5-5 pts by vol per 1 pt. (I)) contg. 0.05-12 wt.% Co carbonyls where the reagents pass cocurrently through a turbulent reaction zone in 20-120 sec. (I) may contain 0.1-3 wt.% CO as e.g. cobalt chloride, nitrate, formate (0.2-2.5 wt.%), acetate (0.3-6%), butyrate (0.4-10%). The short reaction time enables use of smaller cheaper reactors. Products are useful as catalyst for oxo synthesis or hydroformylation.
