Abstract

Diamonds are produced by decomposing organic cpds. free of C-H bonds (e.g. hexahalobenzenes, hexahaloethanes, tetrahaloquinones) e.g. at below 2000 degrees C and 100 kb to produce carbon atoms or groups of carbon atoms, which are then transformed (under the same conditions) to diamond. Since a large amount of halogen gas is formed, process is pref. carried out in the presence of a halogen trap (e.g. Li metal).
