Abstract
A filter appts. for gases evolved from an electrolytic cell used for making Al consists of an electrostatic precipitator, in which the gas stays for 0.1 - 1.0 sec., with an arrangement for injecting alumina into the gas flow immediately it leaves the precipitator, the alumina being esp. intended to remove F cpds., while the electrostatic precipitator removes mainly heavy metals, partic. Fe cpds., with possibly some tar from the baked C electrodes, though a much longer stay in the precipitator would be needed for complete tar removal. The gases and alumina pass to a bag filter, while the alumina with absorbed F cpds. is sent to the electrolytic cell. In this way the presence of Fe cpds. in the alumina, with consequently adverse affect on aluminium quality, is avoided.
