Abstract

Hard water is pretreated by CO2 gas through a microporous membrane permeable to CO2 but not to water. The membrane is pref. PVC with pores of apparent dia. between 0.01-5 mu and has a critical surface tension of 40 dynes/cm and is made water-repellant by a vulcanisable elastomeric organopolysiloxane compsn. The pretreatment arrangement has two compartments sepd by membrane. with water passing through one compartment and CO2 supplied to the other compartment. The reverse osmosis membranes are pref. cellulose acetate or sulphonated polyarylether sulphone.
