Abstract

The filaments are produced by extruding a soln. of 25-35 (wt.)% cellulose ester in a solvent mixt. of 35-100% dioxan, 0-35% formamide and 0-35% acetone, the soln. being extruded through a die into an evapn. zone, enriched with the solvent, for a residence time of 0.01-1.0 sec. after which the filaments are immersed in an aq. coagulating bath at 0-50 degrees C, opt. contg. >=11 wt.% Lewis acid, and the acid filaments are washed and wound up. They are used for hollow fibres membranes for removing divalent salts from 'hard' water by reverse osmosis, allowing much lower operating pressures.
