Abstract

A feed stream of an inert gas contg. 0.5-10 ppm. oxygen by vol. is fed at a constant rate through a confined combustion zone at 600-1200 degrees C. containing a combustion supporting catalyst bed at least 8 cms. long. The effluent from the combustion zone is fed to a continuous quantitative detector for gaseous oxygen which produces an electrical signal varying with the oxygen content of the effluent gas. A small amt. of oxygen-free aqs. dispersion of a combustible material is injected into the combustion zone upstream from the catalyst bed. The detector reading changes and yields a signal related to the oxygen demand of the aqs. dispersion.
