Abstract

An energy-absorbant bumper for a motor vehicle consists of a flexible shield made of sprung steel or glass-fibre-reinforced polyester and optionally coated on its front surface with a layer of cellular flexible material. It is supported by its rear face on absorbant buffers, fast with a rigid portion of the vehicle and formed of a first element of cellular synthetic material, e.g. expanded polyurethane, which deforms reversibly but in a hysteresis curve, and a second element of rigid cellular material, e.g. rigid polyurethane which is subject to low elongation and permanent deformation.
