Abstract
Oxidn., -and heat-resistant Fe-Cr-Al alloy steel, having good weldability and machinability without abnormal oxidn. during repeated heating in automobile waste gases above 1000 degrees C, useful for gas purification system combining catalytic converter and a waste gas cycle, contains =0.02%C, =0.15% Si, =0.3% Mn, 0.4-1% Ti, 15-25% Cr, 2-3.5% Al, bal. Fe; provided Cr- and Al-contents lie within range defined by lines connecting points corresp. to (i) 16.5% Cr, 3.3% Al, (ii) 25; % Cr, 2.9% Al, (iii) 25% Cr, 2.2% Al, in a given diagram obtd. by plotting Al % against Cr %. Content of Cr, Al and Ti is such as to allow the prodn. of a 1 mu alpha-Al2O3 film at alloy surface, acting as protection against attack by halogens. Incorporation of 0.05-0.4% Zr widens Al- and Cr-content range to area defined by lines connecting points (i') 15.5% Cr, 3.6% Al, (ii') 25% Cr, 3.2% Al and (iii') 25.% Cr, 2.0% Al. Alloy pref. contains 0.05-0.2% Nb and 0.02% N, and surface is pref. free from halogen-contg. substances.
