Abstract

Battery separator consists of a mat of compressed inert polymer with a size 10 mu, the mat being characterised by having (a) a basic wt. of 15.5-61.9 esp. 27.1-50.4 g/cm2 (b) a thickness of 0.25-1.3 esp. 0.51-0.76 mm, (c) a porosity of 40-70 esp 55-60%, (d) a max. pore size of 5-25 esp. 7-20 mu, (e) an electrical resistance of 0.006 esp. 0.003 ohm/cm2 (f) a friction resistance of 50-800 esp. 80-500 cycles, (g) a torsion stiffness of 0.25-1.5 esp. 0.5-0.9 cm/degree, and (h) a solid fraction of 0.3-0.6 esp. 0.4-0.45. The separator is tough, acid and alkali resistant.
