Abstract

580,390. Galvanic batteries. THURSTON, A. P. Aug. 18, 1944, No. 15804. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1943. [Class 53] A storage battery separator consists of a pair of glass fibre mats separated by rods of synthetic resin which may be attached to the glass mats. Fig. 2 shows in plan the positive and negative electrodes 11, 12 of a battery with the intervening separators. The mats 20, 21 are made of glass fibres which may be bonded together with starch, gelatin, phenol formaldehyde resin, furfural resin or other binder. The mats 20 which make contact with the positive electrodes may be thicker than the mats 21 and may be of thinner fibres. Between the mats are a number of rods 25 which are made of a synthetic resin and which may be secured to the mats by an adhesive consisting of a solution of the resin in a volatile solvent. Suitable resins are nylon, polystyrene, saran (vinylidene chloride), vinyon (Registered Trade Mark, Copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate), koroseal (plasticized polyvinyl chloride), acrylic acid ester resins such as methacrylate resins, for example, lucite. As an alternative to the use of adhesives for securing the rods to the glass mats, the rods and mats may be assembled in position and heated to soften the rods. The application of pressure during cooling causes the rods and mats to adhere together. Fig. 3 shows an apparatus for producing the separators in a continuous length which can be cut to the required dimensions. A die 31 is provided with several nozzles spaced apart in a straight line through which the rods 32 of synthetic resin are extruded. Glass fibre mats are unwound from rolls 34, 35 and brought into contact with the rods 32 by means of rolls 39, 40. The rods are still soft and tacky when they reach the rolls 39, 40 and they adhere to the glass mats on hardening. Specification 154,083, [Class 53], is referred to.
