Abstract

An appts. for processing rubber or plastics is of the screw in a barrel type and is as follows: the screw comprises >=2 threads over at least a part of its length; the adjacent helical grooves constituted by these threads alternate in their cross-sectional area along the length of the screw, one increasing as the other decreases, so that material is alternately squeezed from one groove to the other and back again as its proceeds along the length of the screw. In a typical arrangement, the groove cross-sections are increased and decreased by corresp. increases and decreases of their depth, the actual width of the 2 adjacent grooves remaining equal in any particular part of the screw.
