Abstract

Finely divided solid particles made to settle out of a carrier liquid by adding an appropriate quantity of a polyelectrolyte in >=2 minor doses. For a bulk liq. the doses are pref. dispersed with a few seconds between each addition. For a continuous flow the doses are introduced at several different points. Pref. the rate of sedimation is controlled as a function of both the number and quantity of doses added. Pref. the flocculant is a polyacrylamide. Sedimentation at 2.4 m h-1 from a suspension contg. 50g 1-1 phosphate fines by 20 cm3 1-1 anionic polyacrylamide was accelerated to 12 m h-1 by using four doses at 5 cm3 1-1 or matched by using only 10 cm3 1-1 added in two doses of 5 cm3 1-1.
