Abstract
Prodn. of stabilised cubic ZrO2 by thermal decomposition of a zirconium cpd. with stabilising additives and subsequent firing is improved by using basic zirconium carbonate as the starting material, mixing it with the stabiliser in an aq. phase, and subsequently firing at 700-800 degrees C. Prodn. of highly refractory articles (for use at temps. exceeding 2500 degrees C) resistant to attack by molten metals, slags and acids. The process is greatly simplified by admixing the stabiliser (6-7% of CaO or CaCO3) in an aq. phase. Slurry of 100 kg. Zr2O(OH)4CO3 in water (weight ratio 2:1) is treated with 1.5 kg. CaO; mixed for 15 mins.; filtered under vacuum; and fired at 800 degrees C for 3 hrs. The product is cubic zirconium oxide contg. (in %): ZrO2 93.0, CaO 5.5, TiO 1.5, SiO2 0.2, Fe2P3 0.05, MgO 0.4, and SO3 0.3.
