Abstract

Soldering of Al heat exchangers, partic. radiators, the components of which are at least partly coated with a layer of solder, by (a) joining together the individual parts of the heat exchanger, partic. the water container, in such a way that these are held in contact with one end forming an unbroken line of contact with the corresp. part, i.e. the header, so that a capillary-type interspace is formed between the parts which are joined together. (b) Applying a liquid flux only to the outer surface of the assembled heat exchanger, the flux being drawn into the capillary-like interspace, only wetting the inner walls to a very small height in accordance with the surface tension, (c) washing out the flux and thereafter heating the exchanger to the flux m.pt. so that the joint to be formed is completely wetted by the further extension of the capillary circulation, (d) heating the heat exchanger to the solder m.pt. so that the resultant liquid solder is only drawn through the capillary passages and sections wetted by the flux.
