Abstract
A heat exchanger e.g. for a motor vehicle comprises a number of pipes seamed longitudinally and a number of cooling fins or ribs soldered to the pipes by a coating of solder provided on each fin or rib prior to assembly of the exchanger, only at the connection area of each fin or rib. In an embodiment flat pipes seamed at 6 are arranged between corrugated fins 2 provided with solder, by dipping, only on the bends 3, 4 and the assembly is heated in an oven to melt the solder and join the fins to the pipes at 5. The end edges of the fins are sealed during the application of solder to the bends. In a modification flat cooling ribs are provided with tapered solder coated sleeves about apertures therein, and flat longitudinally seamed pipes are passed through the sleeves to be soldered therein when the assembly is heated in an oven. The known methods of, (a) providing tinned pipes with cooling ribs and heating to melt the tinning which solders the seams of the pipes and solders the pipes to the ribs and (b) providing tinned ribs on welded pipes and heating to effect the soldering of the ribs to the pipes by the melted tinning are referred to.
