Abstract
High-purity aromatics are produced from catalytic reforming or cracking gasolines or naphthenes by (a) heating a feedstock free of mono- and diolefins and conts. 20 ppm. S, in the presence of H2 at 530-600 degrees C/1-60 kg/cm2 in the presence of a catalyst contg. >=1 VIa, VIIa and/or VIII metal, with an LHSV of 0.1-10 and an H2/hydrocarbon molar ratio of 0.5-20; (b) removing gases from the product; (c) rectifying the product to give an overload contg. 2-20 wt % of the benzene present in the product from (a), which is recycled to stage (a); (d) rectifying the bottoms from (c) to give benzene as overhead; and (e) rectifying the bottoms from (d) to give toluene as overhead and a mixt. of xylenes, ethylbenzene and >8C aromatics as bottoms.
