Abstract

Process for 4-methyl-5,7-bis(beta-morpholinoethoxy) coumarin (I) (i.e. by condensing an alkyl beta-aminocrotonate with phloroglucinol in the presence of a strong acid or a metal salt, as catalyst, and reacting the 4-methyl-5,7-dihydroxycoumarin (II) with a salt of a beta-morpholinoethyl halide in the presence of an acid acceptor. (I) is a known drug. Higher yields than known processes. Ethyl beta-aminocrotonate is reacted with phloroglucinol at 20-100 degrees C in a polar solvent in the presence of SnCl4, TiCl4, H2SO4, H3PO4 or TFA and beta-morpholinoethyl chloride hydrochloride is reacted with the product in the presence of K2CO3 in a polar solvent.
