Abstract

Aqueous pharmaceutical substance for local application to the eye, consisting essentially of an ophthalmic agent and 0.1-5.0 wt.% (based on the substance) of microcrystalline collagen. The microcrystalline collagen improves the pharmacological action of the ophthalmic agent and/or prolongs the duration of its therapeutic effect. Numerous examples of ophthalmic agents are listed in the specification, typical being carbachol, pilocarpine salts, epinephrine salts, dexamethasone, phenylbutazone, sulphacetamide, hydrocortisone, chlorbutanol, prednisolone acetate, phenylephrine HCl, tropicamide, ZnSO4, polymyxin B sulphate, neomycin sulphate, atropine sulphate and triamcinolone acetamide. A suitable microcrystalline collagen is marketed under the name "Avitene) (RTM) by FMC Corp. The pharmaceutical substance can take the form of an aqueous dispersion, or of a salve or semi-solid or gel-like composition. A suitable composition contains 0.003-1% carbachol; HCl (0.01M) to pH 3.5; 0.5% microcrystalline collagen and water q.s.
