Abstract

Dimethy 4,4-dioxane-1,3 is prepd. by condensation of isobutylene and formalin with H2SO4 catalyst in the presence of trimethyl carbinol (I). An example uses 0.2 mole (I) per mole of isobutylene. Reaction in (I) prevents the formation of by products and therefore gives better yields (up to 74.3-80.6% theory based on isobutylene). The prod. is used for synthetic rubber prodn.
