Abstract

Structure for protection against impact, comprises a rigid cellular body having at least part of its surfaces covered with >=1 layer of a relatively flexible and elastic foam of different density, bonded to the surface of the rigid body. Pref. the rigid body comprises a foam of PVC, phenolic or polyurethane resin and the flexible foam is made of flexible PVC or of an integrally skinned polyurethane foam. Composite structure combines the energy absorption props of a rigid foam with the load spreading props of a layer of flexible foam, and thus spreading the load on e.g. a passenger's head in a crash while protecting the relatively brittle core foam from minor local knocks.
