Abstract

A gas for carburizing steel and iron alloys is obtd. by mixing an inert or slightly reducing gas with hydrocarbons such as (m)ethanol, propane, butane, higher hydrocarbons or mixt., and pptg. the soot by heating the gases at 700 degrees -1000 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst. Before mixing the gases, the hydrocarbon is pref. heated to 700 degrees-1000 degrees C either alone or with a trace of the carrier gas. The carburizing process may take place simultaneously with the smelting of glass-metal substances. The substances for carburizing should have chemically pure surface and the carburizing process should be carried out with base metals present to hinder soot pptn. during carburizing.
