Abstract

Phenylpyrimidine derivs having the general formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are opt. same substs, e.g. CnH2n+1-, CnH2n+1O-, CnH2n+1COO-, CnH2n+1CO-, and n is 1-12) are useful as crystalline liq. nematic substances, pref. consisting of mixts. of >=2 (I), opt. admixed with dichroic dyes or other crystalline liq. cpds. in electro-optical systems, opt. contg. nematic layers with snaked structure, for modulation of passing or incident light, as solvents in spectroscopy and as stationary phase in gas chromatographyl. (I) are prepd. by condsn of p-substd. benzamidine-HCl with n-alkyl- or n-alkoxy-malonates in the presence of MeONa; conversion of substd 4,6-dihydroxypyrimidine obtd. to the dichloropyrimidines and dehalogenation.
