Abstract

The invention relates to the preparation of p-cyanophenyl 4-alkyl-4'-biphenylcarboxylates in which said alkyl group is linear and contains 4-8 carbon atoms or is a branched alkyl group having 5-7 carbon atoms and a methyl group as the branch group, where a 4-alkyl-4'- biphenylcarboxylic acid in which said alkyl is as defined above is condensed with p-cyanophenol. The compounds obtained in this way are suitable for use in liquid-crystal substances.
