Abstract

Halophenyl dihalopropyl ethers are produced by reacting a halophenol with allyl chloride in alcoholic alkaline solns. separating the resulting halophenyl allyl ether from the alkaline solvent and suspending it in an inert organic solvent, conducting into the suspension, with cooling, 1.0-1.5 mol. of Br2 and/or Cl2 per mol. of ether, filtering the resulting reaction mixture, and isolating the desired product from the filtrate after distilling off the solvent. Process gives good yields of pure product from readily obtainable starting materials in a simple manner. The halophenyl dihalopropyl ether products are used as flame-retardant additives for thermo- and duroplastic materials. They are also useful (either alone or with potentiators) as bactericides and biocides.
