Abstract

Selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated fats, oils, fatty acis and mixts of these using Cr-contg Pd carrier catalysts in which the ratio Cr:Pd (as metal) is at least 1:1 and pref. 1-3:1. Prefd catalysts are made by impregnating gamma-Al2O3 with solns of Pd and Cr cpds and calcining e.g. for 3-4 hrs at 450 degrees C. Hydrogenation is carried out at 60-220 degrees C and 1-30 atm. The catalysts allow selective hydrogenation of fats, oils and fatty acid (mixts) to give products suitable for margarine prodn.
