Abstract
Chromatography plates having a flexible plastic base and featuring parallel stripes of absorbant coatings 200 mm thick. Pref. the support comprises a flexible film based on polyethyleneglycol terephthalate or on a polyolefin, pref. polypropylene, and the coating is laid down in layers which are separated from one another by simultaneous extrusion through alternating outlets of a comb profile die of the reactive absorbant compsns. and of an insol. polymerisable or thermoplastic resin, specif. an epoxy or silicone resin or pref. polypropylene. Alternatively the twin coatings may be deposited from a machined print roll as used for heligraving. The die profile may ensure that the stripes of the reagent material are positively captured. Alternatively the reagent coating may be deposited in channels on the face of a ribbed or undulating support film. Esp. claimed for TLC plates supporting stripes of a chromatographic mixture of 70-98% silica and 30-2% polyvinyl alcohol. Also for plates where the reagent stripes independently comprise different compsns. Plates are based on flexible films rather than traditional glass plates are lighter, stronger, can be rolled, are better suited to prefabrication and storage. The side support provided for the thick reagent stripes inhibits cracking and detachment of the coating during rolling or other manipulation of the plates.
