Abstract

A thiourea based protective coating compsn. for freshly cut wood contg. one or more quat. ammonium bases. For logs and timber, to protect freshly cut surfaces from staining with blue fungi. Components are water sol. so penetrating the wood to prevent internal fungus growth and compsn. remains effective on exposure to the atmosphere. The compsn. is of 1.5 - 10 esp. 2-4 wt.% conc. in water. The bases are mixts. of trialkyl(arylalkyl) ammonium halides/nitrates/sulphates contg. 40-80 esp. 55-65% 14C alkyl gps. and 20-60 esp. 35-45% 16C alkyl gps. Wood treated with a mixt. of 2.5% conc. of thiourea: benzyl-dimethylalkyl-ammonium chloride (60% 14C: 40% 16C alkyl) 90:10 does not stain on exposure to the atmosphere.
