Abstract

Ceramic building element is produced by bonding together particles of expanded, calcined clay, i.e. light or porous clinker by adding a ceramic binder which is either made porous by foaming, e.g. foamed glass, or is solid and non-porous, and at least partly covers the light clinker particles e.g. in the form of a glaze. Used for prodn. of blocks, columns, panels etc. for use in walls, roofs and floors. The properties of the light clinker and the ceramic binder reinforce each other. The element is non-combustible, resistant to temps. between -260 and + 430 degrees C and degradation and has a high strength and good dimensional stability. Pref. the binder contains a pigment. The surface of the element is hardened by calcining and a greater amount of the binder is present in the surface layer of the element. The element may contain rods, wires, tubes, discs, granules or fibres of a material which is inert at the expansion temp. of the binder such as steel, glass or a mineral, as reinforcement. The element may contain >=1 channel, which is formed at the expansion temp. of the binder, for receiving electricity cables or heating or sanitary pipes.
