Abstract

Title cpds. of formula (I): (where C1-C2 is a single or double bond; C9-C11 is a gp. C=CH, in which Hal is halogen and R1 is free or esterified alpha- or beta-OH and C16-C17 is a gp. in which R2 is H, alpha- or beta-CH3 or free or esterified alpha- or beta-OH, R3 is free or esterified alpha-OH, and R4 and R5 are H, 1-4C alkyl or opt. ring substd. phenyl or aralkyl) are of use as anti-inflammatories, antiallergic and cardioactive agents. Some also have vasodilating activity, and the cpds. are useful as inters. for other active steroid cpds. Cpds. (I) are prepd. by esterificn. of corresp. 21-OH cpds., pref. with conc. HNO3/acetic anhydride. The prods. may be converted into different cpds. of formula (I) by conventional procedures.
