Abstract

Moulds for the production of pile materials having the appearance and texture of woven and tufted pile fabrics are built up from large numbers of hollow needles or tubes. The moulds may be shaped to correspond with the contours of the surfaces to be covered, as for example automobile floors and upholstery, or in cylindrical form for the manufacture of continuous pile material. In a preferred design needles of the type used for injection syringes, with removable copper core and an internal diameter of one half to twelve mils, are cut to a length >= five times their diameter, and assembled in a former of the required shape. The spaces between the needles are filled with metal powder and the mould is integrated by sintering. Needles or tubes with holes of any section are used for the moulds, so that many different pattern effects are attainable in the pile material which has many applications not confined to carpeting.
