Abstract
Crude sweet or acid wheys, from cheese factories, are treated by passing first through at least one strongly-acid cation exchanger, and then through a wealkybasic anion exchanger, to remove first the Ca salts, proteins and colouring matter, and then the lactic acid. 1 to 10% of crude whey is added to the decationised whey before it is passed through the anion exchanger. The demineralised liquid may be treated to recover lactose. The ion exchangers are regenerated by passing first nitric acid and then ammonia through them, and the products removed and extracted. Various arrangements for semi-continuous working are given. Used for recovery of useful products from wheys from cheese making.
