Abstract

The parent patent described a female mechanical coupling for pressure pipe where the mouth of the coupling incorporated a seal ring with a divergent double skirt retained by a simple annular clip in the mouth of the coupling. In this modification, an internal flange at the mouth of the coupling positively captures the clip used to retain the double skirted seal. The internal dia. of the clip is greater than the internal dia. of the main seal. Pref. the clip has an oblique break to facilitate its insertion, though it may be continuous and force fitted. Pref. the faces of the clip are bevelled both to guide the incoming pipe end and to butt against the seal in a manner which is further self-sealing against internal pipe pressures. Esp. for injection moulded double ended female couplings free from adhesives or welds for water distribution systems. The internal lip may be a machined face. Modification makes it easier both to fit the seal and its retaining clip and to introduce the pipe end. Coupling/pipe dimension tolerances can be less critical. Successive pipe length alignment can vary by =7 degrees without seal losses.
