Abstract

Injection moulding machine with a screw preplasticization unit ending in a swan-necked die through which the melt can be injected into a mould. The swan-neck unit can then be withdrawn to allow a supplementary ram to enter the mould to sustain the moulding pressure while the main screw continues to turn and work the material for the next injection. Esp. suitable for injection moulding thermosetting resins or rubbers. Avoids interruption of rotation of the screw in the preheat unit which could cause local degradation of static material. No need for an intermediate transfer moulding pot, or for the preplasticizer screw to turn fast or be machined to a working ram fit at its tip to sustain the mould curing pressure.
