Abstract

The SO2 contng. effluent is scrubbed with an aqs. soln. of sodium (bi)sulphite whereby the sulphite is (partially) converted to bisulphate by the adsorbed SO2. The resultant soln. is divided and part contacted with alkali pref. magnesium (hydro)oxide to regenerate sodium sulphite and ppte magnesium sulphate which is removed by filtration. The filtrate is combined with the second portion of divided soln. and recycled as scrubbing medium. The solid magnesium sulphite is mixed with coke and calcined at 400-900 degrees C to recover elemental S and MgO (recycled). The process is cheap and efficiency, removing 99% SO2 and permitting efficient subsequent recover of the S-content. Particulate material in the effluent is also scrubbed out and sepd. by filtration from the soln. prior to the alkali treatment.
